Welcome to St. Michael’s NS, Castlepollard, Co. Westmeath. We are a co-educational primary school under the patronage of the Catholic Bishop of Meath. Together with the Board of Management, the parents and the parish community, we provide Religious Education for the pupils in accordance with Roman Catholic Church, although students of all faiths are welcomed, valued and appreciated. In 2017 under the Department of Education we were awarded DEIS status. The children receive a healthy balanced lunch daily consisting of a sandwich/wrap, fruit/ yogurt and water. We have a current enrolment of 140 children. The children are divided between 6 classrooms and two Autism Classes. There are 4 SET support teachers working both inclass and in a withdrawal capacity.
St. Michael’s deploy an assortment of programmes such as; Jolly Phonics; a fun and child centred approach to teaching literacy using actions for each of the 42 letter sounds. Aistear: which assists children to develop language and numeracy skills through play, Guided reading and Reading Recovery: specialised literacy programmes to develop reading skills. We also have teachers trained in the “Fun Friends” and “Friends For Life” programmes which promotes social skills and children’s well-being. We also utilise Numicon which is a multisensory approach to understanding and problem solving in Maths.
Our website has been established to create a link between the school community and the school. The school has a highly dedicated staff that works with an enthusiastic group of children. Our website serves as a means for parents, family, friends and visitors to observe some of the range of activities that we do in school. It also provides an opportunity for our students, who have many, many varied talents to show some of the excellent projects that they produce across the curriculum. You are welcome to our website. We hope that it allows you to see how enthusiastic, excited and talented our students are and that you enjoy browsing these pages.
